As we watch our new normal evolve, we must, in the midst of this chaos, remember to take control of our own personal health and wellbeing. Something so vital cannot get lost in this coronavirus madness.
The first Monday of May we have always promoted ‘Melanoma Monday’ – a conscious reminder to take care of our skin and prevent melanoma, one of the least common but most deadly forms of skin cancer. Our dermatologists and residents would block time out of their busy clinic schedules to freely offer spot checks to our employees and the community who had a concern about a mole that seemed to change or become suspicious. Jenny Liu, MD, Chief of Dermatology at Hennepin Healthcare, recently shared some skin tips to our healthcare staff who are on the front lines fighting COVID -19. Since then, not only are all staff wearing masks, but essential workers such as our wonderful grocery store clerks and the general public are wearing masks. These can take a toll on your face.
Long periods of tight masks will increase dryness, irritate preexisting sensitive skin, and cause acne. (more…)
Many people are understandably worried during the COVID-19 pandemic. And, when we worry, we may not sleep as well. Common complaints for those who are not sleeping well include feeling down, anxious, irritable, as well as having troubles concentrating. (more…)
Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) – April 11 through 17 – is a national campaign led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. Its goal is to “amplify the voices of Black mamas and center the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements.” In a country where Black women are four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy or giving birth, this is a national crisis.
BMHW is a call to closely inspect the structures and systems in place that contribute to poor outcomes for pregnant women, especially those of color. It’s a call to “meaningfully shift the numbers by considering solutions – without fear, blame, or shame” and secondly, to recognize the contribution of of Black mothers, including motherhood, scholarship, leadership and research.
