The Heals on Wheels (HoW) program at Hennepin Healthcare centers around the concept that to truly provide whole person care to everyone in our community, sometimes we must make the effort to literally meet patients where they are. Winter weather can be beautiful, but it can also be dangerous. Just like adjusting to driving on the snow and ice, we need to remember how to walk on the snow and ice. A fall on snow or ice can be embarrassing, but also harmful. Falls are the number one reason for brain injuries, not to mention what a fall can do to your bones and the rest of your body.
Penguins are seasoned veterans walking on snow and ice. Maybe we could learn something from them. Spreading your feet out slightly— like a penguin— while walking on ice increases your stability. When we walk, our legs’ ability to support our weight is split mid-stride. To walk on ice, keep your center of gravity over your front leg. (more…)
Our Talent Garden wrapped up the year with two Youth Summits. Latine Youth with Stethoscopes was held on Nov. 5 with 74 youth in attendance. Black Men with Stethoscopes was held on Dec. 3 with 40 youth in attendance.

As summer wanes and signs of fall arrive, my attention turns to how I can honor the bounty of summer’s harvest and preserve it for the winter months ahead.
I did not grow up with this tradition, though I vaguely recall an awareness that some people in rural Tennessee, where I was born, spent time canning, preserving and “putting up” food for the winter. I have chosen to learn these skills in recent years as a way to align my family’s lifestyle with our values of respect for the earth, reducing food waste (and packaging and food costs), having more connection to our food and eating as locally as possible for as much of the year as possible. Two weeks ago, two members of our Hennepin Healthcare team – Lindsey King and her mother Laura King (shown 1st and 2nd above along with Governor Evers, Brian and Patty Brunette and Lindsey’s son Matthew Marzolf) —took a walk with the governor of Wisconsin across sacred land that had been torn from their ancestors and that Lindsey’s great-grandfather spent his life fighting to reclaim. It was the end of a long journey, more than 100 years in the making, to return sacred burial grounds to the Anishinaabe people. (more…)
According to the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office, in 2020, 78 people went to Minnesota hospitals with fireworks injuries. That doesn’t come close to the actual number of people injured who didn’t seek care at a hospital. This doesn’t mean you have to avoid fireworks altogether this Fourth of July.
