Same-day Surgery and Procedures designs space for optimal patient experience

It doesn’t happen every day – the opportunity to build a new surgery and procedure unit from scratch.  As a critical component of HCMC’s new Clinic and Specialty Center, an internal team had the opportunity to re-imagine the entire process of same-day surgical procedures.

Using the 3P design approach – evaluating the process, product, and people involved in the redesign – a clinical work group developed a single-flow patient-centered design to enhance the patient’s experience and create a highly efficient clinical model for same-day surgeries in the new building.

The essence of the design creates a very smooth, thoughtful, and intentional transition of the patient throughout their experience – from registration through the procedure, recovery, and transition home – each step is well planned and minimizes disruption to the patient as they proceed through their surgery.

The setting will also be something to marvel at, with a 6th-floor panorama of the city in the waiting room to natural light throughout the patient spaces, the experience will feel remarkably calming.

Common specialties that will utilize the surgery center are orthopedics, ENT, urology, GI, dental, podiatry eye, and general surgery.

The new Clinic and Specialty Center will be a hallmark facility in the upper Midwest and the thoughtful design and planning exhibited by the Surgery and Procedure staff will make the patient experience exceptional.
