Safe to Sleep® Recommendations Explained
Many people remember the “Back to Sleep” campaign that was initiated in the 1990s. Back to sleep recommends babies should always be put to sleep on their back for safety. Since the 1990s, the rate of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), initially declined and now has plateaued for several years. This prompted the National Institutes of Health to recommend the slogan “Safe to Sleep®” in order to improve upon the initial recommendations and better educate families and communities on more comprehensive safe sleep recommendations. On Saturday, October 6th, almost 200 Hennepin Healthcare breast cancer patients, their friends and families and volunteers from the Comprehensive Cancer Center came together for the 10th annual Breast Cancer Survivors Celebration. Every year our clinic staff recognize women and men for their strength and commitment to fight and heal from breast cancer. We held the event in our new Clinic & Specialty Center‘s Stillman Education Room and spilled out into the atrium. Children and guests decorated pumpkins and won prizes at the fish pond. Patients and family visited information tables from our community supporters, including the African American Breast Cancer Alliance, Firefly Sisterhood, Livestrong, the American Cancer Society and Open Arms of Minnesota, just to name a few. Lunch was served and we had a raffle – all patients won a gift! This year’s celebration has been our biggest yet and we can’t wait for next year. (more…)
When I set out on my path to medical school, I knew I would work in an aspect of medicine in which I would have the opportunity to work with patients long term and be able to help focus on various aspects of the whole patient. These goals are what have driven me to be a primary care doctor here at Hennepin Healthcare. As a primary care doctor, my goal is always to treat patients as people first. I also aim to work with patients to be their healthiest selves in all aspects: physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. To me, one of the most fundamental parts of my primary care practice is not just to treat illness, but to work to prevent diseases before they happen. I love discussing vaccines and cancer prevention strategies as these are ways we can work together to help them not get sick in the first place. This is why I am passionate about colon cancer screening. (more…)

As we continue to introduce areas of the new Clinic & Specialty Center, we take you to one of the busiest and most important areas that many patients will visit during their time in the building – the pharmacy.
The Clinic & Specialty Center will actually have two pharmacies, one retail pharmacy – for patients, and one internal pharmacy that supplies medications solely for the medication needs of clinics within the building. We had the privilege of sitting down with Mike Pitzl, Pharmacy Director and visionary behind the design of the Clinic & Specialty Center pharmacies, to learn more about some of the new features and enhancements to the patient experience.
