Brooklyn Park Clinic certified as a Silver-Level Adolescent Centered Environment

We are proud to announce that our Brooklyn Park Clinic was certified as a Silver-Level Adolescent Centered Environment by the Michigan Adolescent Health Initiative (AHI). This was an 18-month process that involved the collaboration of the clinic, the Between Us program and an AHI coach. The clinic went through the Adolescent -Centered Environment Assessment Process (ACE-AP) and then made changes to meet the certification requirements. Learn all about this accomplishment: (more…)

Black Women with Stethoscopes Youth Summits inspire youth and make us hopeful for the future of healthcare

Over 150 young women ages 12-18 years old recently visited our campus to learn about healthcare careers during our Black Women with Stethoscopes Youth Summits on April 30 and May 15. Youth learned that not only are these careers within reach, but that they can play a critical role in delivering culturally-centered care and help decrease health disparities. Black Women with Stethoscopes is the second series of youth summits from our Talent Garden program, which connects youth of color to opportunities in medicine and healthcare. (more…)

Toya López, a patient and former team member at Hennepin Healthcare, strongly believes in a sustainable healthcare design that cares for patients and environmental health.

“At Hennepin Healthcare, we are amongst leaders,” praises Toya López, a patient and former team member (employee) of Hennepin Healthcare, as well as a board member for Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate. “The people who work here care about the purpose. Part of the purpose is to make a healthier environment.”

López’s career integrates their passions for health equity and environmental sustainability. “I’m grateful for the care I receive here as a patient. I know what it’s like to be a patient and an employee. This is very much a purpose-driven place,” explains López. (more…)

Aida Strom, Hennepin Healthcare’s health equity community engagement program manager, envisions a collaborative healthcare model built with the histories and hopes of those it serves.

“I so strongly believe that every single human deserves good healthcare and respect within the healthcare system,” expresses Aida Strom, a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Dakota Oyate.

As the health equity community engagement program manager at Hennepin Healthcare, Aida is participating in an innovative planning process to advance health equity. She advocates for a collaborative healthcare model that partners with communities to practice historically informed, consent-based and culturally respectful care. She believes that this is possible at Hennepin Healthcare, recognizing its unique role within the region’s healthcare landscape. (more…)

Rebecca Thomas, an Elliot Park Neighborhood advocate, shares the importance of holistic and trusted programs that are guided by community conversations.

“I grew up in an area that was highly diverse with different racial, cultural and religious backgrounds. I came from a low-income family and was surrounded by wealth disparities,” shares Rebecca Thomas, a licensed clinical social worker and the Interim Administrator at Elliot Park Neighborhood, Inc.

“I was drawn to the voices that you don’t typically hear, those who have to work extra hard to make ends meet. This drew me to the community organizing side of things, based on the desires of what people were explicitly telling me.” (more…)

A Treasured Welcome Representative Shares Her Passion and Hope for Hennepin Healthcare

When you walk into Hennepin Healthcare, you may be lucky enough to meet Semora Murrell, a welcome services representative with a big, impossible-to-forget smile. “I’m the first face you see,” she says. “I can chat with everyone, I know some of everybody.”

“The role has a simple title, but many things come along with it,” says Semora, who is celebrating eight years of working at Hennepin Healthcare. “Most people believe it’s just greeting people and sending them on their way, but it’s much more than that. Celebrating World Children’s Day: Our commitment to provide for, protect and encourage children to participate

November 20, 2020 is the 61^st anniversary of the World’s Children’s Day, which commemorates the Declaration of the Rights of the Child that passed by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on November 20, 1959. The rights of children have evolved and transformed since that historic day. In 1989, the UN put in place the Convention on the Rights of the Child to expand upon the Declaration and formulate a series of specific provisions further define these rights.
