During a time when it feels like there is so much uncertainty and fear in the world, many of us have felt powerless. For one team member wanting to take action in the face of the current crisis in Ukraine, this put him on a flight across the world.
Information Security Director Yan Kravchenko, who has lived in the United States for 30 years, is originally from Kyiv and felt a call to respond to the largest humanitarian crisis the world has seen since WWII. “We are all constantly struggling with our inability to help – what’s happening [in Ukraine] is an atrocity, it’s unimaginable,” says Yan, who has worked at Hennepin Healthcare for more than two years. “I have a lot of friends who I’m in daily contact with that are still there – always worrying about them and panicking whenever I can’t reach someone is gut wrenching.”
Over 150 young women ages 12-18 years old recently visited our campus to learn about healthcare careers during our Black Women with Stethoscopes Youth Summits on April 30 and May 15. Youth learned that not only are these careers within reach, but that they can play a critical role in delivering culturally-centered care and help decrease health disparities. Black Women with Stethoscopes is the second series of youth summits from our Talent Garden program, which connects youth of color to opportunities in medicine and healthcare. (more…)
This fall the Integrative Health team at Hennepin Healthcare has joined with the international non-profit organization Walk with a Doc to promote healthy movement and community. Starting on Sat. Nov 20th at 10am, Dr. Shawn Olson will lead a fun and relaxing walk through the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden . We will meet under the Cowles Pavilion (the big glass pavilion near the Walker Art Center) where Dr. Olson will give a brief wellness talk and then lead a stroll-at-your-own-pace-and-distance walk through the park. If the weather is bad, we’ll move the walk to the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Both spaces are free, open to the public, and offer the opportunity to explore the healing power of the intersection of art and movement. (more…)
In the late 60’s, Dr. Donald Freeman, Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at then Minneapolis General Hospital, and a nurse named Margaret Hewitt conducted forums asking women what they wanted their birth experience to look like.
In 1971, Margaret used what she learned at these forums and her knowledge as a Certified Nurse Midwife to develop the first hospital nurse midwife practice in Minnesota at HCMC. This new and innovative model directly involved women in decisions about their care and birth experience and was remarkably successful.
Now 50 years later and 14 midwives strong, our Hennepin Healthcare nurse midwives continue to nurture the philosophy of care that Margaret instilled, ensuring all expectant mothers have the right to care that meets their spiritual and cultural beliefs, values and traditions. Join us in celebrating 50 years of caring for women and welcoming babies on Saturday, September 25 from 1-4 pm in the Blue Building Courtyard. There you can connect with our team and enjoy photos and memorabilia from the past five decades.

November 20, 2020 is the 61st anniversary of the World’s Children’s Day, which commemorates the Declaration of the Rights of the Child that passed by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on November 20, 1959. The rights of children have evolved and transformed since that historic day. In 1989, the UN put in place the Convention on the Rights of the Child to expand upon the Declaration and formulate a series of specific provisions further define these rights. Black Maternal Health Week (BMHW) – April 11 through 17 – is a national campaign led by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. Its goal is to “amplify the voices of Black mamas and center the values and traditions of the reproductive and birth justice movements.” In a country where Black women are four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy or giving birth, this is a national crisis.
BMHW is a call to closely inspect the structures and systems in place that contribute to poor outcomes for pregnant women, especially those of color. It’s a call to “meaningfully shift the numbers by considering solutions – without fear, blame, or shame” and secondly, to recognize the contribution of of Black mothers, including motherhood, scholarship, leadership and research. Hennepin Healthcare is completing a major expansion in Brooklyn Park. The Brooklyn Park Clinic, at the corner of Zane Ave. and Brooklyn Blvd., has doubled in size, added more specialists and opened a physical therapy gym and an onsite pharmacy.
“People need access to specialty care close to where they live and our expanded clinic brings more Hennepin Healthcare specialists and services to the northwest suburbs,” said Dr. Teresa Barrera-Anderson, Medical Director of Brooklyn Park Clinic & Pharmacy. (more…)
