November 20, 2020 is the 61^st anniversary of the World’s Children’s Day, which commemorates the Declaration of the Rights of the Child that passed by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on November 20, 1959. The rights of children have evolved and transformed since that historic day. In 1989, the UN put in place the Convention on the Rights of the Child to expand upon the Declaration and formulate a series of specific provisions further define these rights. “Let’s Talk”: Ten tips for talking with teens about relationships and sexual health

Sexual development is a natural part of adolescence. Beyond the physical changes in their bodies, adolescents begin to feel “crushes” and sexual attraction, and many engage in sexual behaviors. In 2019, more than one in every three eleventh graders in Minnesota reported having had sex before. In today’s increasingly digital world, adolescents hear and see messages all the time about what relationships and sex should look like. As parents, you can help your adolescents make sense of these messages, understand their bodies, and make decisions that align with their goals and values.

Pediatric Vaccine Mobile serves children in the community during the pandemic

Hennepin Healthcare staff delivers exceptional care without exception, and this has remained true even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early in the pandemic, families were understandably fearful of coming to the clinics for preventative healthcare services such as immunizations. Over the next months, childhood immunization rates began to plummet nationally and in Minnesota, and there was looming risk of not just COVID-19 but vaccine preventable diseases.

A team led by pediatrician, Dr. Dawn Martin, pediatric nurse practitioner, Sheyanga Beecher, and community paramedic/EMS, Amber Brown, recognized the importance of protecting children as the most vulnerable among us. Dr. Martin and her team wanted to make sure that if children could not come to Hennepin Healthcare for essential vaccines, we would go to them. (more…)

Young adults in the time of COVID-19

The United States is seeing more young adults testing positive for COVID-19 as cities and states re-open bars, restaurants, salons, gyms, and other businesses where people can congregate. When infected, many healthy young adults have mild symptoms or may even be asymptomatic. When people aren’t very sick, they worry less about spreading it to others, but they can still carry the virus and transmit it to people who may be at higher risk for severe disease. (more…)

Why I care about colon cancer screening

When I set out on my path to medical school, I knew I would work in an aspect of medicine in which I would have the opportunity to work with patients long term and be able to help focus on various aspects of the whole patient. These goals are what have driven me to be a primary care doctor here at Hennepin Healthcare. As a primary care doctor, my goal is always to treat patients as people first. I also aim to work with patients to be their healthiest selves in all aspects: physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. To me, one of the most fundamental parts of my primary care practice is not just to treat illness, but to work to prevent diseases before they happen. I love discussing vaccines and cancer prevention strategies as these are ways we can work together to help them not get sick in the first place. This is why I am passionate about colon cancer screening. (more…)

Join us on May 1st for our annual Melanoma Monday event to receive free spot checks for unusual or suspicious spots or moles on your skin.

Melanoma, one of the least common forms of skin cancer, can be deadly. It can occur anywhere on the skin. Although the exact cause is not clear, the risk of developing it is increased with exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning lamps and beds. Limiting exposure reduces the risk. Cases of melanoma have been increasing over the years, especially in younger women. (more…)

5 tips to get your skin ready for summer

Dermatologist Dr. Jenny Liu offers some tips to get your winter skin ready for summer.

Exfoliate
Get ready to reflect that summer glow! Healthy skin glows because light reflects off of it. If it doesn’t, it could be due to the buildup of dead skin. Using a mild exfoliating scrub or mild glycolic acid wash can help remove this buildup that can make your skin look dull.

Use an antioxidant
Apply an antioxidant serum every morning. This is will not only help prevent the skin from sun damage, but products containing vitamin C can also help lighten and brighten your skin. (more…)

Take the bite out of frostbite

Frostbite can happen quickly during Minnesota winters and infants and children are at high risk. Although adults should be aware of frostbite prevention as well, children are at a greater risk because they lose heat from their skin more rapidly than adults. Following are 5 ways to avoid frostbite in children:

Always check the weather forecast before letting young children go outside to be sure they are dressed appropriately and they are dressed in layers – it’s best that the first layer be cotton because it absorbs moisture.
Make sure your child wears a hat that covers their ears and in extreme cold a scarf that covers their lower face and tip of nose.
Choose mittens instead of gloves to keep little fingers warm.
Make sure boots are waterproof – toes are prone to frostbite.
Remove wet clothing especially mittens or socks as soon as possible to avoid the water freezing directly in contact with skin. Wet clothes draw heat away from the body.
