Go red for women or just wear red day, which is it? Either way, February 5th wear red! Here’s why:
Remember when the first Friday of February, during National Heart Month, was designated as Go Red for Women and they had the little red dress pin? ( I still have and love that pin!) And now we are asked to wear red on the same day to raise awareness of heart disease for all?
In the early 2000s, the American Heart Association (AHA) faced a challenge. Heart disease was perceived by many as a ‘man’s’ disease, and the typical heart attack symptoms people were familiar with, were those more targeted to men’s symptoms. Together, with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), they embarked on a campaign to educate and raise awareness that heart disease is not only a disease for men, but it is the #1 killer of women. With astonishing results, Go Red for Women has achieved many of their goals and is still active with educational events targeted at women on prevention and symptoms of heart disease and stroke.
The NHLBI has expanded this program with National Wear Red Day to bring greater attention to heart disease as a leading cause of death for every single American. They promote movement (exercise), nutrition and prevention. To women, they promote The Heart Truth® and celebrate the month of February with activities and information on their web site. Throughout the year, the NHLBI also promotes awareness of other issues related to lungs (eg. asthma) and blood (eg. blood disorders and promoting blood donation).
Confusing? When it comes down to it, let’s just all wear red this Friday, February 5th and remember how important our hearts are to stay healthy. The coronavirus proved how vulnerable we are if our hearts are compromised. Our hearts and lungs work together and it is important to take care of them.
